Lot Essay

Ill-fated Pedro V, son of Queen Maria II da Glória of Portugal (d. 1853) succeeded his mother in 1855 at the age of 18, after two years under the regency of his father. He received the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1846. He was extremely popular and married Princess Stephanie of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen in 1858 but she died aged 22 in 1859 without posterity. Pedro, aged 24, and his younger brother Fernando died travelling of a mysterious unidentified disease. He was succeeded by his younger brother Dom Luíz.
