TOLKIEN, J.R.R. Autograph letter signed ('R. and E.') to 'Dearest A[unt] Jane' [Mrs Edwin Neave], n.p., 15 November 1961, 2 pages, 4°.

A CHOICE OF POEMS, REMINISCENCES OF OXFORD, AND THE 'GRIM WORLD'. Tolkien discusses the choice of poems to go with 'Tom Bombadil' and make up a book: 'I have raked up and refurbished several poems scattered about by me in various obscure corners in the past years, which were not, as were the Hey Diddle song and the "Troll sat alone", used up in the Lord of the Rings'. Tolkien discusses his former chair at Oxford, 'I wasn't a professor of "Literature" -- which I still think is not a good basis for academic study', and explains the nature of the Professorship of Poetry. The letter ends with family news: 'I don't think any of my children are flourishing. It's a grim world. They are all variously overworked ... But the next generation seem to be fairly all right'. (2)
