CHURCHILL, Sir W.L.S. Autograph letter signed to Pamela, Countess of Lytton, Chartwell, 20 October 1950, two pages, 4°, envelope.

'A SIGNAL ... FROM THE DAYS WHEN I WAS A FREAK'. Churchill replies to a letter from Pamela, reminding him that it had been fifty years ago that he had proposed to her. 'I have had (as you may guess) and awful time lately -- exciting, exhausting, absorbing -- and it is not till now that I can tell you how much I cherish yr signal across the years, from the days when I was a freak -- always that -- but much hated & ruled out -- but there was one who saw some qualities, & it is to you that I am most deeply grateful'. He suggests a meeting, perhaps during the sitting of Parliament, and ends with thoughts again on their engagement: 'Fifty years! -- how stunning! but after all it is better than a hundred. Then there wd not be memory'.
