A Meissen (Marcolini) neoclassical clock-case and a cover
Circa 1775, the case with blue crossed and swords, star and / mark to base, the German porcelain cover possibly Meissen
Modelled as a section of a porphyry fluted column piercing a cube, the top with a circular aperture, the cube with gilt ribbon-tied reeded corners, each side moulded with pendant convex oval pink medallions painted en grisaille with Cupid at various pursuits, the front of the cube fitted with a circular enamel dial fronting the movement, the reverse with a circular glazed gilt-metal hinged door, the cube's underside with a pendant garland of gilt oak leaves and lion's head handles at the sides, their pierced mouths with gilt-metal loops, the lower part with gilt gadroons, the socle with radiating gilt flutes divided by husks issuing from slender gadroons, on a square stepped foot edged gilt key pattern, the circular domed cover with spiralling apertures below a gilt bud finial (cover extensively restored, other minor damages and rubbing to gilding, dial cracked and chip near hinge, one loop lacking)

Lot Essay

For a vase of related form, see Berlinger, Königlich Sächssissche Porzellanmanufaktur Meissen, 1710-1910 (Dresden, 1911), p. col. pl. 22, no 3 which he attributes to Kändler. Kändler initially reluctant to adopt the Louis XVI style, which caused considerable problems for the management of the factory.
