AN ENGLISH OFFICER'S DRESS SWORD
Circa 1800
With slender double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section (some surface pitting), the forte etched, blued and gilt on each side with the royal arms, garter motto and 'For My Country & King', gilt copper-alloy hilt engraved with trails of flowers and foliage and comprising lobe-shaped quillons, heart-shaped double-shell linked at the front to the knuckle-guard by a single bar on each side, faceted urn-shaped pommel with button, and original grip bound with copper wire, in original leather scabbard (repaired with the addition of two brass bands) with gilt copper-alloy mounts, the mouth-locket signed 'R. Johnston late Bland & Foster Sword Cutler & Belt Maker to his Majesty, 68 St. James's Stt, London'
