A FRENCH SMALL-SWORD WITH CHISELLED STEEL HILT
Second quarter of the 18th Century
With slender blade of hollow triangular section retaining traces of etching at the forte, the hilt decorated throughout with Classical male busts mostly framed in scrolling foliage, on the double-shell and knuckle-guard chiselled in low relief, on the quillon-block and pommel in very high relief, all against a gilt fish-roe ground, the wooden grip bound with silver ribbon and twisted silver wire, the former retaining some of its gilding
