2 volumes, 4o (200 x 150 mm). Titles within woodcut border. (Volume II with 6W2-6W4 lacking at end and 4M2 and 4M3 supplied from another copy, titles trimmed and laid down, some shoulder notes and running titles trimmed.) Later calf (upper cover of volume I detached, some light wear). Provenance: Monte Sti. Bernardi (bookplate); Anson Phelps Stokes (bookplate, see also lot 1).
FIRST EDITION OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC VERSION OF THE BIBLE IN ENGLISH. This version was based on the same lines, and came from the same hands, as the Rheims New Testament of 1582 (see lot 29). The complete work is commonly known as the "Douay-Rheims version." Darlow & Moule 231; STC 2207. (2)
