3 volumes, 8° (219 x 121mm, 190 x 112mm). Volume III with 4 pages of advertisements at end. (Repaired tears to 4 leaves in vol. I., some spotting, marginal dampstaining and soiling.) Uncut in contemporary calf, spines gilt with thistle motif, in common morocco-backed brown cloth case. Provenance: printer's proof corrections -- 'James Dogg' (name in pencil, vol. Predominantly punctuation and spelling corrections, by the printer or publisher, with some textual emendations; volume I pp. 67, 70, 160, 212, 218 (the two latter with spelling corrections for Scots dialect) 262; volume II pp. 85, 99, 176; volume III, pp. 42, 83, 91, 140, 213, 281, 304, 319. Redgauntlet is the last Waverley novel. Written in both epistolary and narrative forms, it describes the fictional return, some time after 1745, of Prince Charles Edward to reclaim the crown. It also contained some autobiographical features such as the author's apprenticeship to the law and a caricature of his father, and was among his personal favourites. One notable passage in the book is 'Wandering Willie's Tale,' a ghost story in Scots dialect (vol. I). Todd and Bowden 178Aa. (3)
