Lot Essay

The marble original of the present group, now in the Louvre, was excavated shortly prior to 1569 and by 1613 was recorded as being in the Borghese collection. Like the bulk of the Borghese antiquities, the Silenus was acquired by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1808 and subsequently shipped to Paris.

Please see lot 102 for a note on Barbedienne.
