Lot Essay

Two scenes from the famous novel are illustrated here. On the left is the episode from Chapter 14 (Channel Buoys) when Genji makes a pilgrimage to Sumiyoshi Shrine. The Akashi Lady has also come by boat, shown in the fourth panel from the right.

A scene from Chapter 20 (The Morning Glory) on the far right shows Genji and Murasaki on a moonlit winter night warming themselves by a bronze brazier. Little maidservants have been sent down to the garden to make a snowman.
