Meiji period (19th century), signed Shohosai
The oval inro decorated in gold, red and black takamaki-e with hirame and kirigane with a caparisoned elephant carrying a lotus throne, the elephant inlaid in ivory and the trappings rendered in inlaid mother-of-pearl, colored ivory, lacquer, soft-metals and colored stones, the reverse decorated with three Chinese children playing instruments and holding a banner, their faces and hands inlaid in ivory, the ground kinji, interiors nashiji; fitted with an ivory bead ojime carved as Hotei with his bag and an ivory netsuke of a Chinese child riding an elephant
