A Dutch walnut longcase clock
JAN HENKELS, AMSTERDAM, SECOND QUARTER 18TH CENTURY
The hood with giltwood Atlas and herald figures above stepped pediment, moulded cornice above fretwork panels, further fretwork panels to the sides, with inset turned and brass-capped columns to the front and conforming half columns to the rear slats, the scroll-framed trunk door with chevron inlays and cast brass scroll mount to the lenticle, with conforming inlays to the plinth with flat front and projecting angles, on bun feet, the brass dial with bird and urn spandrels to silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with fleur-de-lys half hour markers, strike/silent lever by 45, matted centre with subsidiary seconds ring and date aperture, signed on a silvered and engraved banner plaque IAN HENKELS AMSTERDAM, blued steel hands with alarm-setting disc to the centre, with foliate scroll engraving to the arch above painted rolling moon disc centred by a painted rocking figure of Chronos (possibly later), the five pillar eight day movement with T-shaped front plate, anchor escapement and Dutch strike, trip repeat and alarm on two bells; with built-up seatboard, dial and movement possibly associated to case
