Lot Essay

An identical 'Upright student candle lamp' used by Elijah Demond while he was a student at Dartmouth College, 1816-1820, now in the Worcester Historical Society is illustrated in A. Hayward, Colonial Lighting, New York, 1962, pl.40.

A very similar example was offered in the Bill Blass sale, Sotheby's New York, 21-23 October 1993, lot 789.
