THE AUTHOR'S FIRST APPEARANCE IN PRINT. His articles appear on p. 58-69 and p. 84-125 and are 'ample indicators of his early interest in and facility with languages.' They were most likely written some time before publication as the Second Sikh War began in May, 1848. Penzer p. 196. Casada 119, 138.

FIRST EDITION of the grammar which Burton refers to as 'now being prepared' in a footnote to p. 89 of his article on the Jâtakì dialect for the Royal Asiatic Society. At the outbreak of the Second Sikh War, Burton already had interpreter certificates in six Indian languages and was studying others, a remarkable achievement in seven years. (2)
