BURTON, Richard Francis. Goa, and the Blue Mountains; or, Six Months of Sick Leave. London: Richard Bentley, 1851.
12°(205 x 134mm). With cancel title-page and dedication, and three partial printings: p. iv, 1-22, p. 1-98 and p. 1-168. (A defective copy without map or plates; entire leaves or sections excised or omitted). Original blind-stamped, ribbed fawn cloth, spine with gilt-lettered title, author and publisher's imprint, original endpapers, (worn, spine darkened). Provenance: Richard Burton, armorial bookplate on front endpaper and his calling card on front paste-down [Captain Sir Richard F. Burton. Athenaeum]. Also signed by Isabel Burton on front endpaper 'Isabel Arundell/Boulogne 52.'
THE AUTHOR'S COPY OF HIS FIRST PUBLISHED BOOK. ALMOST CERTAINLY THE PUBLISHER'S MOCK-UP GIVEN TO BURTON and which he then gave to Isabel the year after they met in Boulogne. Bibliographies do not note whether the First Issue in fawn cloth is with or without the publisher's gilt imprint at the foot of the spine. Accepting that this is a mock-up and proof binding, then copies in blind-stamped, pebbled fawn cloth without the spine imprint were bound later.
