Broadsheet (534 x 355mm). Letterpress title, 1p. explanatory text. 21 hand-coloured lithographic plates by Dickinson Brothers after Graham or Robinson, on 18 leaves of thick wove paper. (Small repaired tear to the lower blank margin of the fifth plate, repaired tears to margins of title and text leaf, very slight spotting to about 7 plates.) 20th-century brown half morocco, titled in gilt on spine, top edge gilt.
A FINE COPY OF THIS RARE WORK: 'The following sketches give some idea of the appearance and duties of the British soldier in Kafirland, as well of the enemy he has to contend with... It is to be hoped that these mountains and valleys will never again be the scene of strife, for they are far too beautiful to be invaded by sword and firebrand' (text leaf). The artists' names were established by Mendelssohn: 'On examination of Hart's Army List for 1853, it appears that the only officers of the 43rd Light Infantry answering to [the initials L.G. and H.R.]... were Lieutenants Lumley Graham and Hugh Robinson'.
