Lot Essay

The attribution to Reni has been independently confirmed by the late Dr. Stephen Pepper and Sir Denis Mahon. The picture is sold with a certificate from the former, dated January 2000, in which he dates the picture to 1638 considering it 'one of the finest examples of this subject [by Reni]'.
