A RARE MOULDED AND CARVED TURQUOISE-GLAZED ARCHAISTIC VASE, GU
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)

Of archaic bronze form, crisply moulded on the central bulb with two pairs of confronted archaistic dragons with angular scrolling bodies, the tall trumpet neck and spreading foot with ascending and descending combed foliate leaves, with four sets of raised notched flanges extending the height of the gu, all covered with a bright turquoise-blue glaze pooling to a darker tone in the recesses (broken and repaired below the middle section)

Although no other vase of this exact pattern appears to be published, closely related turquoise-glazed wares are known, including a Kangxi-period beaker vase that is undecorated and illustrated in Monochrome Porcelain, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1999, pl. 146; and a Qianlong-period hu-shaped vase moulded with archaistic designs in a similar style to that on the present vase, illustrated ibid., pl. 151.
