Modelled in the form of a duck, well carved swimming in swirling waves, grasping a branch of millet in its bill, the details of its feathers finely incised, the stone of a very pale celadon tone with areas of opaque inclusions

Lot Essay

No other carving of a duck in this posture appears to be recorded. Cf. other carvings of ducks in the Beijing Palace Museum, illustrated in Jadeware (III) - The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 83 for a standing duck, and pl. 84 for an example, like the present lot, grasping a millet branch in its bill.
