Cal. 21"162, with nickel-finished lever movement, 21 jewels, Guillaume balance, micrometer regulator, gold cuvette, the silvered matt dial with Arabic numerals, blued steel spade hands, two subsidiary dials for up and down indicator and constant seconds, in plain circular case with hinged back, case, dial and movement signed

Lot Essay

Accompanied by Vacheron Constantin Certificat d'Origine confirming production of the present watch in 1947 and its subsequent sale in 1951. It furthermore states that only two examples of this model were made.

Deck watches in gold are extremely rare to find, for the simple reason that they had a sheer functional purpose for which the very expensive version of a gold case would be utter luxury.

In the chartroom of a ship the chronometer was the most important instrument, but on deck or in the wheelhouse the smaller hence easy to carry deck watches were used. These pieces were moved all over a ship and were therefore mainly made of less delicate and cheaper metals such as steel, silver or aluminium.
