Lot Essay

These pictures appear to relate to portraits executed by Kneller in the late 1680s and which were subsequently engraved by Peter Vanderbank and John Smith.

The families of the Dukes of Schomberg and the Dukes of Leeds were connected through the marriage of Amelia Baroness Conyers, only daughter of Robert D'Arcy, 4th Earl of Holdernesse, the great-great-grandson of the first Duke of Schomberg, to Francis Godolphin, 5th Duke of Leeds, in 1773. The first Duke of Schomberg, Frederick (1615-1690) depicted here, was awarded the Order of the Garter in 1689. Frederick's son was also a distinguished professional soldier, Meinhardt, Duke of Leinster and 3rd Duke of Schomberg (1641-1719) pictured here, came to England in 1689, before he too was installed Knight of the Garter in 1703.
