signed and dated 'G. Vertue f. 1742' (centre right) and inscribed
'An early Wit, by justest Precepts taught By Arts improved, by solid judgment wrought. Mature for Heaven, & crown'd with earthly Fame,/He nobly closed the Line from whence he came.' (centre right on base of capital) and further inscribed 'EDMUND/DUKE of BUCKINGHAM/born A.D.1715.' (lower centre)

Lot Essay

This present watercolour depicts Edmund, Second Duke of Buckingham and Normandy (1715-1735). He was also painted by I Zaachi and subsequently engraved by Robert Grave, an example of which can be found in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
