KANGXI (1662-1722)
With globular body surmounted by a slender cylindrical neck and standing on a short tapering foot, covered on the exterior with a mirror-black glaze thinning to brown towards the rim and stopping neatly above the foot rim, detectable shadow of original gold-enamel chrysanthemum scrolls around the body below a band of tassles around the rim and stiff leaves around the neck, the interior and base glazed white

Lot Essay

'Mirror-black' is mentioned by Père de'Entrcolles who was at Jingdezhen in 1720 as a high temperature glaze coloured with low-grade Chinese cobalt (an iron-manganese-cobalt mixture). Because the glaze was fluid during the firing, low temperature and 'cold' gilding was suitable decoration
