The Rest on the Flight into Egypt, with a kneeling angel presenting flowers

This is one of a number of variations on the subject by Algardi: a gilded bronze relief is in the Palazzo Venezia in Rome and drawings are at Windsor Castle, Dusseldorf, Florence, Lisbon, New York (sold at Christie's, London, 2 July 1996, lot 56) and Los Angeles (J. Montagu et al., Algardi, L'altra faccia del barocco, exhib. cat., Rome, Palazzo delle Esposizioni, 1999, nos. 13 and 73-78).
The attribution to Algardi was kindly confirmed by Jennifer Montagu upon examination of the drawing.
