Lot Essay
A study for the picture dated 1672 painted by Maratta for the Church of San Nicola dei Padri dell'Oratorio in Ancona and now in the Pinacoteca there (C. Pizzorusso in La Pittura in Italia, Il Seicento, Milan, 1988, I, fig. 590). The picture was commissioned by Giovanni Pietro Nembrini, and executed by the artist during one of his sojourns in the Marche.
An earlier, and smaller, full compositional study for the painting in pen and wash is in Dusseldorf (E. Schaar, Die Handzeichnungen von Andrea Sacchi und Carlo Maratta, Dusseldorf, no. 253, fig. 56). Twelve red chalk studies for the figures are also in Dusseldorf (E. Schaar, op. cit., nos. 241-252) and two are respectively at Windsor Castle and the Uffizi (A. Blunt and H.L. Cook, The Roman Drawings of the XVII & XVIII Centuries in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen at Windsor Castle, London, 1960, no. 255; U.V. Fischer Pace, Disegni del seicento Romano, exhib. cat., Florence, Uffizi, 1997, no. 132, fig. 147).
