CIRCA 1500-20, PROBABLY FAENZA
The body with a ground of blue scrolling foliage and flowers reserved at the front with a shaped circular blue-ground medallion with a portrait of a courtly lady in profile to the right, within an ochre and yellow cartouche edged with turquoise and blue laurels, above a horizontal label inscribed ·S·d·fuco·Acetole in blue Gothic script, the shoulder with stylised foliage, the short neck with an everted rim, the waisted lower part with a band of scrolling blue foliage (chipping to rims, upper part of neck, parts of shoulder and lower part above footrim lacquered perhaps to disguise breaks, areas of overpainting to her shoulder and elsewhere probably disguising flaking to glaze, flaking and fritting to shoulder and body)

Lot Essay

Although previously thought to be Tuscan, this large albarello is probably of similar origin to the example in Nurenberg (see Silvia Glaser, 'Majolika, Die italienischen Fayencen im Germanischen Nationalmuseum Nürnberg' Bestandskatalog [2000], no. 12), which she describes as probably being made Faenza.
