Lot Essay

See Felix Herbet, Les Graveurs de l' Ecole de Fontainebleau, Vol. V, no. 38, for the engraved source from which the subject is directly derived. A dish with the same subject, but a different border, was sold in these Rooms on 25th February 1991, lot 39. A dish in the Louvre with a very similar border with trophies, but without a coat of arms and painted with a central scene of Alexander The Great covering Darius's body, is illustrated by Jeanne Giacomotti, Catalogue des majoliques des musées nationaux (Paris, 1974), p. 469, no. 1379.
