PROVENANCE: a member of one of the confraternités des pénitents (binding) -- Hyacinthe Henry (early inscription on verso of title) -- Raoul Léonor l'Homme Dieu Tranchent, comte de Lignerolles (sale, Paris, 29 January-3 February 1894, part I, lot 183, ill.) -- armorial blindstamp on front free endpaper 'Lo Visconte e l'Enor' -- sale, Paris, 17 March 1975, lot 65, ill. -- Landarchet, Paris (catalogue 69, 1976, no. 90, ill.).
A FANFARE BINDING FOR ONE OF HENRI III'S CONFRATERNITéS DE PéNITENTS (for which see lot 18). This volume was bound for one of the penitentiary confraternities founded by Henri III and, typically, bears crucifixion scenes on the boards, and a skull, Henri III's arms, and Henri III's motto on the spine, as does lot 19 (Le pseaultier de David (Paris: 1586)), which was also bound for a member of one of the penitentiary confraternities. However, on this volume the emblems have been incorporated into a fanfare design and the volume is more decoratively tooled than the very simple binding on Le pseaultier de David, which is unadorned but for the emblems of the confraternities.
