Breviarium Romanum. [Venice: Giovanni Varisco & co., March 1562].
8° (149 x 101mm). Colophon printed on fo. 384r. Printed in red and black. Woodcut figures of saints and Varisco device on title, 6 full-page woodcuts, woodcut borders and historiated and ornamental initials. (Single wormhole and small marginal stain in last few quires, lower margin of last leaf cut away.)
BINDING: Venetian binding by the Arabesque Outline Tool Binder, c.1562; gold-tooled dark brown morocco over thin wooden boards bevelled inwards at centre of each edge, gilt and blind fillet border, spine with alternating single and double bands, compartments tooled in blind, edges gilt and gaufferd to a knotwork design within double dotted-line border, missing two fore-edge clasps fastening on rear board, pastedowns, later flyleaf at back, (minor repairs at spine ends, band ends and a few board edges, one or two small wormholes); modern brown cloth folding case. PROVENANCE: Vettorio Sirigati (name on title, pasted-over) -- J.W. Six de Vromade (booklabel; sale, The Hague, 16 November 1925, lot 70).
The Arabesque Outline Tool Binder, a shop first identified by Schunke and dubbed the 'Leermauresken-Meister', was active in the 1560s. Hobson cites nine ducal commissions, four other manuscripts and five printed books bound by the same shop, and Laura Nuvoloni has recently added another two works, extending the shop's activity to 1571.
