AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY. The leather is beautiful both in colour and texture and the design is highly sophisticated in its restraint. It is the work of Etienne Roffet, publisher and binder, who succeeded in the family firm begun by his father Pierre. Etienne was appointed binder to the king in 1539 and executed a series of bindings for François I; he remained active as both publisher and binder until his death in 1548/59. The authorship of this binding has been recently confirmed by an examination of royal bindings at the Bibliothèque nationale (see Laffitte and Le Bars, p. 39, citing this binding). Adams B-2130a.
