BIBLE, Psalms in Latin -- Le pseaultier de David. Paris: Jamet Mettayer, 1586.
4° (278 x 200mm). Woodcut initials. Printed in red and black, ruled throughout in red. (Some variable spotting and browning, light dampstaining, lacking à1-3 (à3v supplied in manuscript), è2 and NN4 excised.)
BINDING: French contemporary tan morocco gilt, boards with central cartouche depicting the crucifixion, triple gilt fillet borders, spine gilt in compartments, the upper decorated with a gilt skull, the central with the arms of Henri III, the lower lettered with Henry III's motto 'SPES . MEA , DEVS.' and the remaining 4 with a fleur de lis, gilt edges (superficial cracking on spine, boards lightly scuffed, skilful repairs to corners and spine ends); modern green cloth solander box.
PROVENANCE: a member of one of the Confraternités des pénitents (binding) -- occasional early annotations -- Chaix Curé (inscription on upper pastedown) -- Monsieur de [--] (erased inscription on upper pastedown) -- erased inscriptions on upper pastedown -- Marie Dupuy née [--] (scored-through inscription on upper pastedown) -- manuscript note on front free endpaper recording the purchase of the volume in Aix on 1 February 1873 -- Dr de Capmaker (loosely-inserted card stating that the volume was formerly in his collection, was purchased for 6,000 Belgian francs in 1942 and estimated at 15,000-20,000 Belgian francs in 1965).
A CONFRATERNITé DE PéNITENTS BINDING (for which, see the preceding lot), on a volume of the psalms printed by the royal printer. This volume was bound for one of the penitential confraternities founded by Henri III after the death of his wife and, typically, bears crucifixion scenes on the boards, and a skull, Henri III's arms, and Henri III's motto on the spine. Adams B-1474 (erroneously calling for a second part collating A-H4, I2, presumably a separate work published by Mettayer bound up with the Cambridge copy of Le pseaultier).
