Lot Essay

The artist spent his whole career in Amsterdam and dated works are known between 1647 and 1672. However, little else is known about his life. Works by the artist are rare; only two other vanitas still lifes are known; one, dated 1666, sold at Sotheby's, London, 30 November 1983 and another dated 1667, formerly with Rapp and published by Bernt (see W. Bernt, Netherlandish Painters of the Seventeenth Century, Munich, 1969, I, p. 391, illustrated).
