Lot Essay

Professor Sumowski has revised his previous attribution for this picture, and now regards it as probably by Samuel van Hoogstraten. He will include it in the sixth volume of his Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schüler, with this attribution. The identification of the sitter remains elusive, however the young man does bear a close resemblance to Herman Dullaert, for whose portrait by Philips Koninck see Sumowski, op. cit., III, p. 1541, no. 1029, illustrated p. 1579.
