A Napoleon III silvered bronze surtout de table

Comprising an oval centrepiece, a pair of ten-light candelabra and a pair of tazze: the centrepiece with scalloped beaded spreading rim above a body moulded with reclining women and foliage, centred by a monogram FYF, flanked to each side by a female caryatid handle, on a stepped spreading acanthus base stamped Odiot A Paris and numbered 609; the candelabra and tazze en suite, the candelabra each stamped Odiot A Paris, one numbered 5702, the other numbered 2452 to the underside and one stamped Odiot A Paris on the side of the base; the tazze each stamped to the side of the base Odiot A Paris and numbered 7028
The centre-piece: 10 5/8 in. (27 cm.) high; 27 in. (70 cm.) wide; 18 in. (47 cm.) deep
The candelabra: 33 in. (86 cm.) high;
The tazze: 13 in. (34.5 cm.) high; 18 in. (45.5 cm.) diameter

Lot Essay

The model for this surtout was first exhibited at the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle, and was silver-gilt. It is reproduced in the Art Journal's Illustrated Catalogue, p. 111 (see illustration above), where it is said that "Odiot's productions are of the highest order of Art; they are, indeed, works of sculpture, and eminent sculptors have supplied the models." The centre-piece is described as "a Corbeille for flowers, to occupy the centre of a table - a most charming production; the figures and ornamentation are beautifully modelled. It is obviously the work of a true artist."
