Lot Essay

These are probably among the 'Thirty Cottage Chairs with matted Seats, the whole Japan'd white & Varnishd- at 8/. Each 12.' supplied by Mayhew and Ince in December 1789.

A related chair pattern featured in a 1769 design by Gillows (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig.247).
