The Voyage of the 'Why Not?' in the Antarctic. The journal of the second French South Polar expedition, 1908-1910... English version by Philip Walsh London, New York and Toronto: Butler & Tanner for Hodder & Stoughton, [n.d. but circa 1911]. Large 8° (251 x 190mm). Folding frontispiece, 41 leaves of plates, one map. (Slight spotting to first and last few leaves.) Original light blue cloth, the upper cover blocked in gilt, the spine in gilt and white (some soiling, particularly to spine). Provenance: N.M. Edmondson (signature); R.H. Edmondson (inscription dated 1922). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH with Rosove's first issue title. 'Hodder and Stoughton produced an especially attractive volume, one of the nicest of the heroic era literature, in large octavo format with generous margins, with high quality full-page plates, in a beautiful binding' (Rosove). Title in green and black with vignette, portrait of Charcot, 2 full-page coloured illustrations after Marin-Marie, with touches of handcolouring added by the pochoir process, 2pp. text.
