WILLIAM SPEIRS BRUCE (1867-1921) AND OTHERS
Scottish National Antarctic Expedition. Report on the Scientific Results of the Voyage of S.Y. "Scotia". Edinburgh: The Scottish Oceanographical Laboratory, 1907-1920. Vols. II-VII in seven volumes (all published), large 4° (307 x 234mm). Numerous plates, map, charts and illustrations. Original brown cloth, blocked in gilt on covers and spine, spine also blocked with flag in blue and white (spines of vols.V, VI and VII with neat gilt-blocked library markings).
FIRST EDITION, A COMPLETE SET OF THE SEVEN PUBLISHED VOLUMES. Volume I did not initially progress beyond the preparation stage: in an altered form, it was eventually published in 1992 (see below). Bruce's doggedly scientifiic and unspectacular Scotia expedition in 1902-1904 achieved impressive oceanographical and biological results on slender means. The expedition was also responsible for the discovery of Coats land.
The present set is made up as follows:
'Volume II. -- Physics. Part I -- Meteorology... II. -- Magnetism... III. -- Tides', 1907. Provenance: Robert Allan (presentation inscription by Bruce); 'Volume III -- Botany, Parts I-XI', 1912. Prospectus leaf loosely inserted; 'Volume IV. -- Zoology, Part I. -- Zoological Log', 1908. Provenance: Robert Allan (presentation inscription by Bruce). 'Volume IV -- Zoology, Parts II-XX. -- Vertebrates', 1915; 'Volume V -- Zoology, Parts I-XIII. -- Invertebrates', 1909.
