A Lacquer Picnic Set
(Sage Jubako)
Edo Period (19th century)
Designed in brown and black lacquer with cherry blossoms floating on a stream in gold hiramaki-e and comprising a three-tier stacking box and serving tray, five rectangular sweet trays and a rectangular sweet box, a sake cup and four bowls and two metal sake flasks in a stand, the open-sided carrying case lacquered to match the set and fitted with a brass handle, the edges lacquered fundame; interiors of bowls and boxes red lacquer
