A Lacquered-Gourd Wine Flask and Cup
(Hisago Bento)
Meiji period (19th century)
The gourd split into two sections; the larger section sealed with a lacquer wall to hold sake and decorated with stenciled cherry blossoms on a ground of crushed shell suspended in lacquer, the other half functioning as a drinking vessel; lacquered on the exterior in gold and green with bamboo and a couplet from a poem; with a lacquered wood stopper and silk tasseled suspension cord
