A Four-Case Lacquer Inro**
Edo period (19th century), signed Toyo and with kao (cursive monogram)
Designed with a continuous scene of a caparisoned horse drinking from a stream bordered by blossoming peonies in gold, silver, brown, red and black takamaki-e, the saddle blanket with highlights of crushed iridescent shell and the rocks beside the stream with kirigane, the stream rendered in brown and gold togidashi, night sky black lacquer with sparse tiny gold flecks, interiors nashiji; fitted with a coral bead ojime and an ivory manju netsuke with a heron on a willow branch under a crescent moon
