A MAMLUK SILVER INLAID BRASS VASE
EGYPT, LATE 13TH/EARLY 14TH CENTURY
Of baluster form with wide flaring trumpet mouth and spreading foot, the body with a large thuluth inscription divided by three roundels each containing a flock of birds around a central medallion, between two smaller registers of plaited kufic inscription over fleshy arabesques, neck with further band of plaited kufic and bands of tendrils, radiating motifs on underside of mouth, similar decoration on underside of body, the interior of the mouth with band of interlace and inverted leaves, foot with corresponding everted leaves, loss of silver inlay to main inscription and large roundels, otherwise mostly retained
