A FLEMISH GAME-PARK TAPESTRY
SECOND HALF 16TH CENTURY, POSSIBLY BRUSSELS
Woven in wools and silks, the central field with a lynx approaching a wolf with cubs and a giraffe to the left, before various hunters pursuing a stag in the background and with porticoed buildings with fountains and with wooded hills beyond, with vertical fold lines, limited areas of reweaving, possibly reduced in height to the top, the left side folded over by 10 in. (26 cm.) and the right by 12 in. (30 cm.), the left side with the giraffe from an associated tapestry, but probably taken from another tapestry from the same set
8 ft. 4 in. (254 cm.) x 10 ft. 4 in. (315 cm.), in its present condition
Lot Essay
A game-park tapestry including a giraffe drawn from the same design was sold anonymously, Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, 12 October 1968, lot 149.
