LATE 17TH EARLY 18TH CENTURY, BY PHILIPPE BEHAGLE, AFTER A DESIGN BY GUY VERNANSAL, JEAN-BAPTISTE BELIN DE FONTENAY AND JEAN-BAPTISTE MONNOYER, ORIGINALLY CONCEIVED AS TWO INDIVIDUAL PANELS AND LATER JOINED TO COMPLETE THE SUBJECT
Woven in wools and silks, from the 'Histoire de l'Empereur de la Chine, depicting the gathering of pineapples with rich vegetation and palm trees, pagodas in the background, with a simulated picture-frame border, originally conceived as two individual panels and later joined to complete the subject, with a consequential minor loss to the joint, the bottom ege of the field with a circa 2 in. (5 cm.) wide replaced strip probably taken from another panel from the same series
