A RARE YUAN CARVED BLACK LACQUER TRAY
YUAN DYNASTY, FIRST HALF OF THE 14TH CENTURY

Carved through the thick lacquer to the interior with a pair of parrots, one in flight, the other resting on a branch, each with finely incised feathers and long tails, reserved against a dense ground of flowering peony branches, the reverse undecorated (restored)

Lot Essay

This circular tray belongs to a small group of 14th Century trays of varying forms exquisitely carved with pairs of birds reserved on a dense floral ground. Cf. several illustrated in Hai-wai Yi-Chen, Chinese Art in Overseas Collections - Lacquerware, National Palace Museum, Taiwan, 1987; pl. 57 is an example in the Los Angeles County Museum with a peacock and peahen; pl. 59, in the Seattle Art Museum decorated with a pair of finches; pl. 60, in the Detroit Institute of Arts decorated with a pair of cranes; and pl. 61, in the Tokyo National Museum decorated with a pair of pheasants.
