EARLY 19TH CENTURY, POSSIBLY IRISH
With curved scrolled toprail and scrolled arm terminals, with squab cushion covered in yellow watered silk, on tapering reeded legs with brass caps and castors, stamped 'IO'

Provenance

Possibly supplied to the 2nd Earl of Rosse (1758-1841) for Birr Castle, County Offaly, and by descent at Birr to the Earl and Countess of Rosse; sold Christie's house sale, 7 October 1981, lot 62.

Lot Essay

This bergere, sold by the Earl and Countess of Rosse in 1981, may have been supplied to the 2nd Earl of Rosse for the newly gothicized Birr Castle, Co. Offally. The 2nd Earl was a patriotic statesman and an uncompromising opponent of the Act of Union with Great Britain, so if this bergere was made for him, it would almost certainly have been made by an Irish cabinet-maker.
