Cornelius Callaghan was a well-known carver, gilder, looking-glass and picture-frame manufacturer whose label appears on several recorded frames, including lot 104 in this sale. In the Dublin Directories he is recorded at Clare Street between 1822 and 1844. He is presumably a relation of the Cornelius Callaghan recorded between 1770 and 1815 in Britain Street and Mary Stret, a glazier, painter, map and print-seller (see Knight of Glin, 'Dublin Directories and Trade Labels', Furniture History, 1985, pp. 263, fig. 7).
An identical mirror by Callaghan was sold Sotheby's, London, 17 September 1999, lot 96 (£4,830).
