LUTHER, Martin (1483-1546). Vrteil D. Martin Luthers vnd Philippi Melanchthonis von Erasmo Roterdam. Ein Christlicher Sendtbrieff...an D. Wolfgang Fabritium Capitonem..., [Wittemberg, n.p., 1523]. 4° (193 x 143mm). Title with a woodcut headpiece and an illustration of two putti fighting and another two looking on, one blowing a horn. (Top margins lightly browned.) Modern vellum-backed boards. Provenance: Henry Howard, Duke of Norfolk, gifted to: -- The Royal Society (stamp on title-verso recording the gift; sold in 1873). Possibly from the library of Willibald Pirckheimer (1470-1530) whose library was purchased by Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundell, grandfather of Henry Howard. FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN. Benzing 1486; VD16 L5007; not apparently in Adams or BMC.

(Stained and spotted throughout, first 3 leaves with a tear in the fore-margin slightly affecting text, ownership inscription torn from top margin of title with partial loss of line-border, lower margin of same leaf lacking one entire section of line-border.)
