HAGGADAH -- Seder Haggadah shel Pesah. Amsterdam: Asher Anshel and partners, 1695.

2° (308 x 196mm). Hebrew type. Engraved additional title depicting Moses and Aaron below 6 vignettes of biblical scenes, woodcut vignette on letterpress title, woodcut tailpiece, 14 half-page engraved scenes, folding engraved map of the Holy Land on guard, all by the proselyte Abraham ben Jacob. (Some unobtrusive staining, several short marginal tears, one just within plate mark of engraved title, light browning.) Contemporary publisher's speckled sheep, blindstamped shield containing the title at centre of sides, red sprinkled edges (a little rubbed and scuffed).

An important edition, containing ONE OF THE EARLIEST COPPER-ENGRAVED MAPS OF THE HOLY LAND WITH HEBREW TEXT. It is also the first Haggadah to be illustrated with copper-engravings; they and the map are the work of Abraham ben Jacob, a Christian pastor in the Rhineland who converted to Judaism and became a copper-engraver in Amsterdam. Interestingly, the map depicts 'the Exodus not as leaving but returning. He depicts the traditional Goshen to the Jordan route, but adds another one beginning in Hebron and ending in Goshen, the route the family of Jacob took to Egypt. The route is marked by the only historical vignette on the map, a wagon representing those which Joseph sent to bring his family to Egypt' (A.J.Karp in From the Ends of the Earth, Judaic Treasures of the Library of Congress, 1991, p.80). The map is frequently lacking. Fuks 521; Laor 876; Yaari 59; Yerushalmi 59-62; Yudlov 93.
