HERBARIUM. [Vienna: 1843-1924].
A large collection of dried and pressed specimens of native European plants mounted on approximately 1150 folio sheets and 30 hardboard panels, the majority arranged by genus with botanical classification in Latin and German, some specimens with nomenclature written directly on the sheet, others with attached printed slips completed in manuscript, most in paper folders, some with a printed label on the cover, several with hand coloured lithographic cut-outs of butterflies pasted around the specimens. (Some minor damage to specimens, a few detached.)
A fascinating collection of dried specimens incorporating examples from some of the most interesting plant collectors in Vienna in the late 19th century. Over 100 sheets have labels of the Bruno Weis Herbarium dated 1922-24, others are dated as early as 1843, several are signed Professor Alois Pokorny 1854, others variously labelled or stamped Baron Hausmann, Botanischer Tauschverein, Leopold Staedter Realgymnasium, Vienna, and Dr Natterer. Pokorny is well known for his work in the field of nature printing, assisting Ettingshausen and Auer in the Imperial Printing Office. He worked at the natural history museum in Vienna and went on to be a teacher first at the academic Gymnasium 1849-64, then director of the Realgymnasium as well as lecturing in phytogeography at Vienna University from 1857-1868. Although the marks of ownership are comparatively infrequent, the composite nature of the collection suggests that it may have been used for teaching purposes in the late 19th century. The specimens remain largely well-preserved, and in view of both its size and its unbound state this herbarium must be accounted a rare survival. Stafleu and Cowan IV, p.325.
