A SWISS GOLD BOÎTE-À-ROUGE APPLIED WITH AN AUSTRIAN MINIATURE
probably Geneva, circa 1800, the miniature Austrian, circa 1785/1790
Circular box, the independent slightly domed cover later set with a glazed oval portrait miniature of Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II (1741-1790) in white uniform and decorated with the Imperial Austrian orders of the Golden Fleece and Maria-Theresa and the Royal Hungarian Order of St. Stephen, backed with a mother-of-pearl plaque, within a gold border stamped with stylized leaves, on a matted gold panel chased with trailing foliage and two rosettes, the sides and base engine-turned and engraved on a polished gold ground, bright-cut borders
